The Declaration of Independence was similar to a "break up letter" from the colonies to King George and the British Parliament. Jefferson made a long list of grievances which means complaints as to why the colonies no longer wanted to be ruled by the King. The Dec. of Ind. also was a foundation for the type of country and democracy that America would become after they defeated the British army and adopted the US Constitution.
