One number is 3 more than twice another. the sum of the numbers is 18. find the two numbers.

[tex]x = 3 + 2y[/tex]
[tex]x + y = 18[/tex]
The second equation can be modified to:
[tex]x = 18 - y[/tex]
[tex]3 + 2y = 18 - y[/tex]
[tex]3y = 15[/tex]
[tex]y = 5[/tex]
Plug y in to any of the first two equations, and you get:
[tex]x = 13[/tex]
