Active transport is a process to move molecules across a membrane from a region with lower concentration to a region of higher concentration, in other words, the molecules go against the concentration gradient. (in concentration gradient molecules move from high to low concentrations).
This movement is possible because it's spend energy in the form of ATP to move the molecules.
