If the late 1800s were a period of economic growth, why is it called the Gilded Age?

The gilded age, or the golden age in the U.S was the start of many things. Vehicles were produced, electricity had become used often, economic boom, and quite a lot more.
Gilded, a synonym is gold or plated thinly with gold. Therefore Golden age.
