f(x) = 2x² - x - 6

2x² - x - 6 = 0

(2x + 3)(x - 2) = 0

x = -3/2, 2

The x-value of the minimum of f(x) is halfway between the two roots of f(x): (-3/2 + 2)/2 = (1/2)(1/2) = 1/4

So 2x² - x - 6 decreases when x ≤ 1/4.
