why does it take 3 copies of 1/6 to show the same amount as 1 copy of 1/2

Simple multiplication:

[tex]\sf{3\times\frac{1}{6}=\frac{3}{6}=\frac{1}{2}}[/tex]

And

[tex]\sf{1\times\frac{1}{2}=\frac{1}{2}=\frac{1}{2}}[/tex]

So do you now see how they are the same? :)
