Why did the students involved in both the lunch counter sit-ins and the freedom rides continue to persevere, even after encountering such violent hostility?

This is of course subjective, as there were likely many individual reasons for perseverance, however the major civil rights leaders of the time, especially Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks, played a large role in keeping these students inspired.
