LINKING OR ACTION VERB? "Jess SMELLS the flowers". I chose action verb because smelling is an action, however my answer key says its a linking verb. Can someone please explain why? Middle school grammar

It should be an action verb, but I guess it could be a linking verb because it links Jess to the flowers?
