[tex]x^2-2x-1=x^2-2x+1-2=(x-1)^2-2=0[/tex]

Solve for [tex]x[/tex]:

[tex](x-1)^2-2=0[/tex]
[tex](x-1)^2=2[/tex]
[tex]x-1=\pm\sqrt2[/tex]
[tex]x=1\pm\sqrt2[/tex]
