Answer:

To maintain a mutual trust with you and that person you committed a promise with.

Explanation:

It builds a reputation to say something and then keep your word for it- i do it personally for the sake of feeling good about doing so and being able to feel trusted by one can make others feel like i'm trustworthy as well. :) Knowing you can trust someone is one of the key stepping stones to any relationship.
