C-14 is radioactive because it contains 6 protons and 8 neutrons instead of 6 and 6 found in ordinary carbon. This imbalance causes the atom to be radioactive.

Being radioactive causes the C-14 to decay. It decays using a process called beta decay.

Beta decay makes the atom of C-14 decay into an atom of 14N during which one of the neutrons in the carbon atom turns into a proton.
