a number that is substituted in an inequality that makes the inequality a true statement.

EXAMPLE :

x + 2 < 7  ;  x= 4

1) substitute 4 into the inequality

4 + 2 < 7

2) solve ( add 4 and 2 together )

6 < 7

the number 4 is a solution to the inequality because 6 < 7 is true.
