The Spanish and French were both, indeed, European powers who had an interest in expanding influence in the new world, primarily to increase the wealth and influence of their countries. They had conflicts over who would control what area of land and land shifted hands many times, but overall, both wanted to expand their influence for the sake of international competition and the expansion of resources for each.
