For starters, monotheism is much easier to maintain than polyteism. You don't have to remember numerous gods and patrons and can only pray to one god. Since this god is usually depicted as someone who loves you, you don't have to worry whether he would punish you because hi is only based on good and on love. It was easier to spread to other people.
