Crossing over occurs in the first division of meiosis. At that stage each chromosome has replicated into two strands called sister chromatids. During this lining up, DNA sequences can be exchanged between the homologous chromosomes. This type of genetic recombination is called crossing over, and allows the daughter cells of meiosis to be genetically unique from one another. Crossing over can only occur between homologous chromosomes.
