The inspiration for the Kairouan minaret was the Buddhist pagodas in China. These structures were first built in wood about 200 AD. They were later built in stone around 500 AD. Moreover, the Kairouan Mosque serves as an excellent example of the pre-Islamic influences on Islam which were influential in different ways.
