Explanation: Plants do all of the photosynthesis ahead of time when they have the leaves, and make enough sugar/other for the plant cells to survive the winter. The sugar gets stored as starch, which the plants can break down to use as energy during the winter, like a hibernating bear uses fat. Plants need way less energy to survive than animals do, since they're not moving, they're not maintain a body temperature, and they're undergoing very little growth or repair.
