Peer review is a process scholars use as a form of self-regulation. It consists of a group of "peers" reviewing the work of another colleague of similar academic achievement. It is also often used to judge whether material is ready for publication.
Peer reviewers are looking for several characteristics in an article before they submit it for publication:
- The article must contain original ideas and should not plagiarize previous work.
Plagiarism: Taking someone else's ideas and presenting them as your own.
- The article must represent an important addition to the literature.
- The article must be well-written (clearly, with no grammar or spelling mistakes, etc.)
- The article must show an understanding of the literature (other researchers' previous work) on the subject.
- The article must match the topics the paper focuses on.
