With subtraction you can move around the variables so

Then subtract 3p from 6p because they are like variables
[tex]3p - 2 = 16[/tex]
Add 2 to both sides of the equation
[tex]3p = 18[/tex]
Divide 3 to both sides to isolate p
[tex]p = 6[/tex]
