Narcolepsy is characterized by "sleep attacks" , which are intrusions of elements of REM sleep into periods of wakefulness. In narcolepsy urgent sleep usually begins almost immediately after the onset of the attack.
Treatment includes regimented sleeping schedule with frequent naps, and drug therapy, such as modafinil.
