The chemical energy that animal cells use most directly to produce heat and to carry out life processes come from the oxidation of glucose using oxygen. Cells generate energy from the controlled breakdown of food molecules. During cellular respiration the cells use food molecules, mostly glucose to generate energy in the form of ATP, that used to drive all cellular activities.
