The simplest organic molecules, hydrocarbons, contain only hydrogenatoms bonded to a carbon backbone. The carbon backbone ranges from one carbon atom in methane, or natural gas, to thousands of carbon atoms, such as in polyethylene, a commonlyused plastic.
