Why does a negative number times a negative number equal a positive number?

Let's say good is a positive number and bad is a negative number. Think of it as this, if something bad happens (-2) to a bad guy (-2), that's good. -2 times -2 equals 4. If something good happens to a good guy, that's good. If something bad happens to a good guy, that's bad. If something good happens to a bad guy, that's bad. I know that can be confusing but that has always helped me to remember.
