In "the wife of his youth," on the afternoon of the ball, mr. ryder had a visitor who told that she is looking for her husband whom she has not seen for 25 years. It was an old black lady, filled with despair, looking for help. She tells Ryder that they were married before the Civil War and since the time she helped him to escape he had never returned back despite his promises.
