Polyatomic ions are charged chemical species which are made up of two or more atoms that are covalently bonded. A polyatomic ion can also be a metal complex that is acting as a single unit. Examples of polyatomic ions that contain oxygen are: HCO^-3, HPO2^-4, ClO4, MnO4-, etc.
