Bariatric surgery is a medical procedure designed to induce weight loss by limiting the amount of food that a person can eat at one time. The procedure involves reducing the size of the stomach, either through the use of an implanted gastric band, by physically removing a portion of the stomach. There is a related procedure called a gastric bypass, in which the small intestine is rerouted to a smaller area of the stomach.
