What does it mean if ethnographers are overt about their roles?

It means that they openly admit that they are doing sociological research. In addition, ethnographers sometimes write down key words or quotations while they are interacting with people. The advantage of these brief sketchy notes are they are an aid to memory when writing more detailed field notes.
