What role did the buffalo play in the conflict between Native Americans and the United States government?

The US Government was killing the buffalo which were need by the Native Americans in order to survive. People would shoot the buffalo for their skins or meat, sometimes both. It caused the Natives to go hungry and it helped the US in their war against them.
