Let the first number be x and second number be y hence their sum

x+y=12 ......(1)

Making x the subject theb x=12-y

Three times be first number is 3x

3x-y=24.......(2)

Adding the two sets of equations then

4x=36

X=36/4=9

The second number will be 12-9=3

So the first number is 9 and second is 3
