Use Newton's universal law of gravitation to explain why gravity is greater on Earth than on Mercury.

Its because the attraction force that pulls objects together increases the heavier the objects are. Since Mercury is much smaller and consequently lighter than earth, it's attraction to an object on the planets surface would be less than if that same object were found on earth. So it's "gravity acceleration" would be less than earth's 9.8m/s^2
