his work helped develop the American Sign Language, the most widely-used form of communication for the deaf community in the world. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was born in Philadelphia on December 10, 1787. The Gallaudet family moved to Hartford, Connecticut when Thomas was a young boy.
