The English language is based on Latin, as well as Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, and Romansh (and possibly Walloon).

Certain words have carried over from these languages.

English originally came from a mixture of various languages, including Germanic, Anglo-Saxon and Latin languages.
